Oia from the sea, the angle almost nobody photographs

From the water Oia is a white band on top of a red-brown cliff that drops straight into the caldera. You see the whole vertical section at once: the Ammoudi quay at sea level, the stepped path, cave houses cut sideways into the rock, blue domes, then the castle ruin.
Land viewpoints look along the rim. A boat looks up at it. That is the difference, and it is why photographs taken from the water look like nobody else's.

No five-hour cruise reaches Oia — the loop turns at the Fira panorama, and both sunset cruises hold off the Akrotiri corner for the sun. The boats that do run this cliff are the full-day charter on its northern extension, the RIB tour, and the water taxi into Ammoudi.
What the cliff shows you from below
The layers. The face under Oia is banded: ash, pumice and lava in the order they fell. From the rim you see none of it. From the water it is the clearest reading of the eruption on the island.
The cave houses. Yposkafa, cut horizontally into the rock beneath the village. From below they are plainly holes in a cliff, which is what they are.
Ammoudi. The quay and its coloured fishermen’s houses sit at the waterline, at the foot of about 300 steps. It has its own page.
The windmills. Built by the Venetians in the 17th and 18th centuries to grind grain, and the landmark sailors steered by.
The castle. The Kastro ruin on the western headland is the terrace the sunset crowd stands on. From underneath it is a low stone edge with people along it.
How many cave houses, how many blue domes, how many windmills. Those figures circulate and no authority stands behind them, so we leave them out.

Common questions
Can you see Oia from a boat?
Yes, from the boats that go north: the full-day charter can extend under the village on request, the RIB runs the cliff close in, and the water taxi lands at Ammoudi directly below it. The five-hour cruises turn at the Fira panorama, so from their decks Oia stays a white line on the rim.
What time does the sun go down from a boat in the caldera?
Earlier than the printed time. Inside the caldera your western horizon is the Thirassia and Aspronisi rim, not open sea, so the sun goes behind land first. The cliffs then hold colour for roughly half an hour, and many guests prefer that half.
Is the sunset better from Oia or from the water?
They are different things. Oia gives you the castle terrace, the crowd and a slow walk out. The water gives you the cliff in one frame, a seat, dinner and no queue to leave. With three nights, do both.
Do you stop at Oia?
We do not land at Oia, because there is nowhere at Oia to land. The village sits on the rim and the nearest quay is Ammoudi, about 300 steps below. The full-day charter and the RIB run the cliff close in; the water taxi lands at Ammoudi.
