A water taxi from Fira to Oia is a private boat that runs north along the caldera wall and lands at Ammoudi, the fishing quay below the village. It removes the cable car from the day. It does not remove the climb: Oia sits about 300 steps above the bay, or a short taxi ride.
This is the crossing people ask us for more than any other, and the one the internet answers worst. Forum threads argue about whether it exists, what it costs and where you buy a ticket. Here is the journey itself, and the honest comparison with the road.
What you pass on the way north
The whole crossing is spent looking up at something you cannot see properly from any road.
You start at sea level under Fira, with the caldera wall on your right shoulder. The first thing that registers is the height. Fira sits about 260 metres above the water. Imerovigli, a little further north, is on the highest part of the rim at around 350 metres.
Skaros Rock comes next: a detached brown mass standing out in front of the white line of Imerovigli. It carried the island's medieval capital, one of Santorini's five *kastelia*. Sources credit the castle to Marco Sanudo in 1207, or place it somewhere between 1205 and 1230. The earthquakes of 1701 to 1711 are what emptied it. At the foot of the rock, on the seaward side, there is a white dot: the chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti, built by Venetian sailors in thanks for protection from pirates.
After Skaros the wall runs on, and the volcanic layering becomes legible. Bands of ash, pumice and lava sit one on top of the other in different colours. From the rim you look along that wall. From a boat you look at the section.
Then Oia. Only from the water do you see the whole vertical drop in one frame: the red-brown oxidised cliff at the bottom, the cave houses cut horizontally into the rock face, the blue domes, and the ruin of the Kastro on the western headland. The windmills stand behind it. The Venetians built those in the 17th and 18th centuries to grind grain, and sailors coming in from the sea used them as marks.
Ammoudi is underneath all of it. A small fishing port at the base of the red cliff, a row of fish tavernas with tables set at the water's edge, coloured boat sheds, and the caiques that cross to Korfos on Thirasia in about twenty minutes.
What happens when you land at Ammoudi
Ammoudi is at sea level. Oia is not. Nobody tells you this part.
The stepped path from the bay up to Oia Castle is published everywhere as 300 steps, cut into the cliff and near-vertical in places. Down takes twenty to thirty minutes. Up takes longer, and in August heat it takes a great deal longer. The path is shared with mules.
The alternative is the road. A vehicle can reach Ammoudi, unlike Fira Old Port, and a taxi up to Oia is commonly quoted at around €10. No bus goes down there, and the quayside parking fills early in season.
So the honest version is this. A boat to Ammoudi deletes the cable car queue and replaces it with either 300 steps or a short car ride. Tell us which one you intend to do when you ask, because it changes the time you should allow at the top by half an hour or more.
If your reason for going is dinner on the water rather than the village above it, none of that applies. The tavernas are on the quay, ten metres from where you step off.

The short version: on an ordinary day with no ships in, a taxi from Fira to Oia is simpler and cheaper, and we will tell you so. The boat wins when you are standing at the Old Port with no road out, and it wins again when the road above you is not moving.
Who this crossing suits
Cruise passengers landing at the tender quay. You are already at sea level with nowhere to drive to. Leaving by water is the only way out of Skala that does not go up the cliff.
Anyone with a table booked in Ammoudi. The bay is the destination, not a waypoint, and you arrive at the door rather than 300 steps above it.
People who came to look at the caldera. The wall between Fira and Oia is the best part of the island seen from below, and this crossing runs the whole of it.
Small groups. The boat costs what it costs. Six people split it six ways.
Who it does not suit
Anyone moving house. Four large cases and a pushchair belong in a car, not on an open deck.
Anyone who cannot manage a step down onto a moving pontoon. Say so and we will tell you honestly whether it works. Usually the answer is the road.
People chasing a sunset slot in Oia with no margin. Wind decides this crossing on the morning, and a plan with no fallback is not a plan.
Anyone travelling on a still, empty Tuesday in April. Take the taxi. It is simpler and we will say so.

Boat/Ferry from Santorini Fira Old Port to Oia Ammoudi Port?
There is no scheduled public ferry on that leg. What exists is chartered boat transport: shared seats on a speedboat sold as a ticket, or a private boat hired whole. Both are commercial services you arrange in advance, not a timetabled route you turn up for.
Fira Port to Oia ?? How?
Two ways. Up the cliff by cable car, then a bus or taxi north, which is fine on a quiet day. Or around the caldera by boat to Ammoudi and up from there. On a cruise day the second usually wins, because it removes the queue that everyone else is standing in.
How long is the boat from Fira to Oia?
Other operators in this market describe the leg as about 20 minutes, and one guide site says 30 to 40. We will not publish a figure for our own boat, because it moves with the sea state and the exact landing. Ask us for your date and you get a real number.
