How to skip the cable car queue in Santorini
The cable car lifts 600 passengers an hour uphill. Santorini's daily cruise cap is 8,000. Since 28 July 2026 the stepped path has been closed, so there is no third way up — only a way out, by sea.
Since the Karavolades stepped path closed on 28 July 2026, the cable car is the only way up from Santorini's tender pier. It lifts 600 passengers an hour, has no pre-booking and no skip-the-line ticket, and queues of 60 to 90 minutes are reported at peak. A boat goes sideways instead.
This page exists because of one date. On 28 July 2026 the Municipal Port Fund of Thira closed the stepped path between the tender pier and Fira, after a landslide. No reopening date has been published. That leaves the cable car, and the arithmetic underneath it is not kind.
The queue, in numbers
Two published figures for cable car capacity circulate and contradict each other: 600 an hour and 1,200 an hour. Both are correct. The system moves 1,200 people an hour in total, 600 in each direction. When you land at the pier, only the uphill 600 belongs to you.

Four ships is not an extreme day. Mid-size ships carry 2,300 to 2,900 passengers each, and up to six ships a day are reported in peak season. The 70% share above is our assumption, not a published count — since July 2026 more organised groups land at Athinios and continue by coach, which helps the pier and does nothing for the people already standing on it.
What changed on 28 July 2026
The Karavolades stairway is the zigzag stepped mule path that has joined the pier to Fira for as long as there has been a Fira to join it to. Karavolades means snails, for the shape of the turns.
It is closed. The Municipal Port Fund of Thira issued the order on 28 July 2026, after a private building wall collapsed onto the route. Pedestrians and riders are both banned. No reopening date has been published.
Published step counts disagree — 558, 580, 588, about 600, about 650 — so we say the roughly 590-step Karavolades stairway and leave it at that.
Two things followed. Cable car queues lengthened. And the cruise lines began landing organised shore-excursion groups at Athinios to continue by coach, with the previous cap of roughly 30% of passengers through Athinios suspended.
If you are an independent passenger stepping off a tender, none of that helps you. You get the cable car, or you get a boat.
Greece charges a cruise-passenger levy at Santorini and Mykonos. It is €20 per passenger from 1 June to 30 September, €12 in April, May and October, and €4 from November to March. It took effect on 21 July 2025 and is still in force in 2026. It is charged to your onboard account when you disembark, and only cruise arrivals pay it — nobody flying in or coming by ferry does.
The three ways off the pier today
There is no road at the tender pier. No taxi, bus or car can collect you there. That single fact is why this list is as short as it is.

The honest part
The sea can stop a boat too. Strong wind shuts the cable car. It also stops us, and sometimes sooner. The captain decides on the morning. If we cancel you have not lost money, but you have lost the plan — so on a cruise day, keep the cable car as your fallback.
We need your ship name and your all-aboard time before we say yes. Not to be careful with you. To be careful with ourselves. A boat that cannot get you back in time is not a service, it is a problem.
We do not hold a berth. No operator on this coast controls the tender pier, and a page that implies otherwise is selling you something it does not own.

We are not going to pretend a boat is cheap next to a €10 cable car ticket. It is not. What it buys is the hour you would have spent in the line, and a landing point a car can reach.

How do I avoid the long cable car queues?
Three things work. Be on the first tender of the morning, ahead of the 09:30 to 12:00 peak. Ride in the middle of the afternoon rather than at either end of it. Or step off your tender onto a boat and travel by sea, which takes the cliff out of your day completely.
How long is the Santorini cable car ride?
Three to five minutes, for roughly 220 metres of vertical rise. The ride is never the problem. Guides publishing in August 2026 report queues of 60 to 90 minutes at peak, with the worst windows running 09:30 to 12:00 in the morning and 15:30 to 18:00 in the afternoon.
How much does the Santorini cable car cost in 2026?
The 2026 figures in circulation are €10 one way for an adult, €5 for a child aged 6 to 12, free under 6, and €5 per large suitcase. Tickets are sold one direction at a time. Older guides still quote €6 or €7, so check the operator's own price list before you plan around it.
Where do you buy cable car tickets in Santorini?
At the booths at the top and bottom stations, and through the cable car's own ticketing site. Buying ahead does not buy you a place in the queue. There is no skip-the-line product and no timed slot, so paying early saves you a payment step, not an hour of standing.
Can I take luggage on the Santorini cable car?
Yes, at €5 per large suitcase in the 2026 figures. Cabins hold six people in two rows of three, so a big case is awkward in the cabin and awkward again in the queue. If you are moving bags between ports, tell us what you are carrying and we will say what a boat can take.
Is a water taxi faster than the cable car?
Not in raw travel time. The cable car ride is three to five minutes and no boat beats that. It is faster in total time on a busy day, because the ride is not what costs you the hour. And a boat lands you where a road exists, which the tender pier does not.
There's no way to do an excursion in Santorini without using the cable car, is there?

Santorini without cable cars or donkey path?
