Black Mountain, Santorini's south-coast cliffs
A lava-formed rock face on the southern shore with no car access at all. It goes past between the swimming stops and the turn at the lighthouse.

Black Mountain, Mavro Vouno, is a lava-formed coastal rock face on Santorini's southern shore, in the same stretch as Red Beach, White Beach and Mesa Pigadia. There is no road to it and no path down; it is visible only from a boat. We pass it, we do not anchor.
It is the stretch of wall between the coloured beaches and the corner of the island, and it is the part of the coast nobody photographs from land, because from land you cannot see it.
What you see from the deck
A dark headland, and then a face where the colour changes partway up.
Below the change the rock is dark. Sources describe this face as lava-formed, and that is as far as we will take it. We have not found a dated geological account of this particular cliff, and we are not going to invent one for a web page.
What the change itself is, in general terms, is the caldera's layering. Round most of this basin the same order repeats: older dark rock at the bottom, pale eruption deposits stacked on top. The clean textbook section is at Aspronisi, where black lava sits under thick white pumice and the boat passes near enough to read it.
There is no car access and no footpath down. If you have seen Black Mountain, you saw it from a boat.
The three colours of this coast

The stacking is the point. Where black sits under white in one face, you are looking at before and after: the old island at the bottom, the eruption on top.
Two places on Santorini carry the name Mavro Vouno. One is this coastal rock face on the south shore, which only a boat reaches. The other is an inland hill just before Oia that people walk up for sunset, with a chapel on top. Sources disagree about the chapel's name, so we leave that one to the walking guides. This page is about the first.
Its neighbour on the same wall
On the same stretch, between Red Beach and the Akrotiri lighthouse, sits a black lava formation that reads as a human profile: forehead, nose, chin. It is published as Indian Rock or Indian Face, and locally as Indianos, and it has its own page.
Like Black Mountain it cannot be reached by car. Between them the two make the case for doing this coast by sea: the road stops well short of both, and a face only makes sense from below it.
Which cruises pass it
Black Mountain is not a swimming stop. There is no cove and nothing to swim to; it is a wall. What it gives you is the passage between one swim and the next, which is usually when people put the phone down.

Which way round you meet it depends on how the captain is running the coast that morning, and on the wind.

Where is Black Mountain in Santorini?
On the southern shore, in the same stretch of coast as Red Beach, White Beach and Mesa Pigadia, before the island turns the corner at the Akrotiri lighthouse. It is a coastal rock face rather than a summit, and it faces open water rather than the caldera.
Can you get to Black Mountain by car?
No. Sources describe the south-coast Black Mountain cliffs as unreachable by car and visible only from the sea. There is no road, no parking and no path down the face. Every published photograph of it is taken from a boat, which is the honest reason it appears on boat itineraries.
Why does the cliff change colour partway up?
The general answer is the caldera's layering: dark older rock underneath, pale eruption deposits on top of it. We are not going to attach a date to this particular face, because no source we trust gives one. The clearest example of the same stacking is Aspronisi, on the western rim.
Is Black Mountain the hill people climb near Oia?
No, though it shares the name. Mavro Vouno near Oia is an inland hill with a chapel on top, walked for sunset views. The Black Mountain on a boat itinerary is the south-coast rock face, and the two are at opposite ends of the island.
