The volcano sits in the middle of every route we sail. You anchor off the lava and swim in the crater itself, with the springs next door when the sea allows. No extra ticket, no separate boat.
You do not need a separate volcano tour in Santorini. Every catamaran cruise we run anchors off Nea Kameni, the black lava island built by eruptions since 1707, for a swim inside the flooded crater — with the hot springs at Palea Kameni when the sea allows. A shared seat is €100; hiking on the volcano itself is not included.

A volcano younger than the villages above it
Nea Kameni is the dark island in the middle of the caldera: bare lava, still steaming in places, and younger than most of the towns on the rim looking down at it.
The island was built by a series of eruptions that began in 1707 and last added rock in 1950. From the rail you read that story directly — black, broken lava with almost nothing growing on it, sitting inside a basin about 11 km across and roughly 390 m deep.
Next to it lies Palea Kameni, the older sibling, and the bay where iron oxide seeps up through the seabed and turns the water rust-orange and warm. That is the hot-springs stop — and it is the one stop the sea has to allow, because the cove holds a boat badly in wind.
The crater swim, on every route
We anchor off the lava shore and you swim inside the flooded crater. No cruise we sell skips it.
The springs are the bonus
When the wind and sea allow, the warm ochre bay at Palea Kameni follows. Wear a dark swimsuit — the iron stains a pale one.
Hiking is not included
Our boats anchor offshore. Walking the crater is a separate landing with a national-park fee, sold by other boats, not by us.
Prices are the whole price: transfers, lunch, wine and port fees included. The warm springs at Palea Kameni join any of the five when the wind and sea allow a boat to hold there. The Nea Kameni national-park entrance applies only to walking tours that land, which ours do not.
The volcano leg, minute by minute
Times are from the 10:00 semi-private day cruise. They shift through the season with the sun; the order can change with the wind.
Round the lighthouse
The Akrotiri light marks the southern corner. From here the caldera opens and the volcano is straight ahead of the bow.
The caldera opens up
The basin runs about 11 km across. Nea Kameni sits in the middle of it — black lava against blue water, with steam rising where the ground is still hot.
The crater swim
The anchor goes down off the lava shore and you go in: deep, clear, still water inside the flooded crater, with the grill already working behind you.
Lunch off the grill
Chicken, shrimp, Greek salad, pasta, dolmades and the dips on deck, with the lava islands still filling the view.
The springs, homeward
Leaving the Fira panorama the boat wraps round Nea Kameni and threads the channel between the two islands. On the right day you swim into Agios Nikolaos bay — ochre with iron, warmer than the open sea, published at roughly 30–35 °C.
The captain reorders the stops when the wind asks him to. That call is made on the morning.
Sailing past it or walking on it — an honest comparison
A walking tour lands you on Nea Kameni for a hike to the crater rim. It is a real thing to do, it costs a national-park entrance on top of the boat, and the path is bare, hot and without shade. Our cruises do not do it. Our boats anchor offshore, and no swimming stop on our route has a jetty.
What a catamaran gives you instead is the volcano in its setting — the whole cone from the water, the crater swim beside the lava, and the springs when the day is kind, which the hiking boats often skip or rush. If your heart is set on standing on the crater, book a landing tour for that and a cruise for the rest. If you want the volcano as part of a whole day on the water, this is the better way to meet it.
Every cruise anchors off Nea Kameni's lava shore for the crater swim, so you meet the volcano from the water rather than the deck rail. When the sea allows, the hot springs at Palea Kameni next door follow. We do not land on Nea Kameni itself — crater hiking is a separate walking tour with its own park fee.
Is the Santorini volcano active?
It is an active, monitored volcano that has been quiet for decades. The island you sail past was built by eruptions that began in 1707, and the most recent one was in 1950. You can still see steam rising in places, which is why the ground smokes and the springs next door run warm.
How warm are the hot springs?
Published figures put the water at roughly 30–35 °C — a tourism figure rather than an instrument reading, so treat it as warmer than the sea, not as a hot bath. The ochre colour comes from iron oxide, and it permanently marks pale swimwear. One honest caveat: the cove takes wind badly, so the springs happen when the sea allows, and the crater swim happens regardless.
Which cruise is best for seeing the volcano?
Any of the five works, because the route crosses the caldera on every one. Morning cruises show the lava in hard, clear light and calmer water for the swim. Sunset cruises put the cone in silhouette. A private charter lets you linger off the lava for as long as you like.
Do I need to pay the Nea Kameni park fee on your cruise?
No. The national-park entrance applies when a boat lands you on Nea Kameni for the crater walk. Our cruises do not land there, so the fee never comes up. Everything our price covers is in the inclusions table on each cruise page, and nothing is added at the boat.
