Santorini boat tour from Oia, and what the road does at sunset

Road transfer both ways is in the price of every catamaran cruise. From Oia it is the longest one we run, which is why the car comes earlier than you expect.

€100 per person · 15:00 - sunset · Shared seats

Every catamaran cruise includes road transfer between your hotel and the boat, Oia included. It is the longest transfer on Santorini, so the car comes earlier than you expect. The semi-private sunset cruise sails 15:00 to sunset at €100 per person, capped for comfort.

Oia is at the far north tip of the island. Everything else on Santorini is south of you, and that single fact shapes the whole day.

The car comes to you, and it comes early

Pickup and drop-off are included on every catamaran cruise. Send us the name of your hotel when you book and we confirm the time and the exact spot in writing.

A lot of Oia is pedestrian. Lanes, stepped walkways, gates a car cannot pass. Where that applies we collect from the nearest point a vehicle can reach, and we name it. Walk that bit once, in daylight, the day before.

Your exact meeting point at the water is confirmed with your booking. You are not being asked to find a port.

Why the pickup is earlier than you think

For the last two hours of the afternoon the traffic on the Oia road runs mostly one way: towards Oia. Buses out of Fira, taxis, hire cars and coaches all converge on one village for the same twenty minutes of sunset.

Going out against that flow is easy. Leaving Oia at half past six is not. So a 15:00 sunset departure means a car in the early afternoon, before the road thickens.

The numbers

Sunset in Oia, three places to be

WhereWhen you need to be thereWhat you seeLeaving afterwards
Oia CastleAn hour before sunset at the very least, longer in July and AugustThe sun going down past Thirassia, over the heads in front of youSlower than arriving. The lanes clear at walking pace.
Ammoudi BayAllow 20–30 minutes for the roughly 300 steps downLow sun on the water, the red cliff at your back, tavernas at the waterlineThe climb back up, or a taxi quoted at around €10
From the boatYou are already in position at 19:00Oia's own cliff lit from the west, then the sun dropping behind the rimThe car meets the boat and drives you home

From inside the caldera the sun disappears behind the Thirassia and Aspronisi rim a little before the published sunset time. The cliffs then hold their colour for roughly another half hour. Two moments, not one.

The trade, stated honestly

You are staying in the village everyone else is queuing to reach. If standing on the Kastro at sunset is the thing you came for, stay ashore and do it. You have the shortest walk on the island to it.

What changes on the water is what is in the frame. From the castle you look at the sun. From the boat you look at Oia: the Ammoudi quay at the waterline, the stepped path zigzagging up, cave houses cut sideways into the rock, the blue domes, the castle ruin and the windmills on the headland.

That is the one view of Oia you cannot have while standing in it. And nobody is in front of you.

Ammoudi is below you, but it is not automatically your meeting point

Ammoudi is Oia's old fishing harbour, at the foot of the cliff about 300 steps below the western end of the village. Caïques leave from there for Thirassia, and the water taxi along the caldera from Fira Old Port lands there.

Whether you join us there is not something we publish. Your meeting point is confirmed with your booking, and the transfer is included either way.

Common questions

Do you pick up from Oia?

Yes. Road transfer between your hotel and the boat is included in the price of every catamaran cruise, and Oia is inside that. It covers every village on the island, and nothing is added for distance. Send us the hotel name and we confirm the point and the time in writing.

What if my hotel is not easily accessible?

Common in Oia. Cliffside hotels are often reached only on foot, down stepped lanes no car can enter. Where that applies we collect from the nearest point a vehicle can reach and tell you exactly where that is. Allow a few minutes to walk up to it with your bag.

How do I get from Oia down to Ammoudi?

On foot, down roughly 300 steps from the western end of the village, which takes 20 to 30 minutes and is shared with mules. Or by road in a taxi. The climb back up in August heat is the part people underestimate, and a taxi up is quoted at around €10.

Is the sunset better from Oia or from the boat?

Different, not better. Oia gives you the castle terrace and a crowd. The boat gives you Oia itself, lit from the west, with nobody standing in front of you, and the sun dropping behind Thirassia before it officially sets. If you only have one evening, the water is the rarer of the two.

Would the morning cruise suit us better?

It might. The 10:00 day cruise is calmer water, three swim stops and back on land at 15:00, which leaves your evening in Oia intact. Take the sunset cruise if you want the light; take the day cruise if you want to swim and still walk to the Kastro at dusk.
