Morning or sunset cruise in Santorini: how to choose
Take the morning cruise if swimming matters most: the sea is flattest before the meltemi builds through the afternoon. Take the sunset cruise for the caldera lit from the west and dinner cooked on deck. Both run five hours, cost €100 per person, and cover the same water in reverse.
Both cruises leave from the same place, use the same boat and the same crew, and cost the same. This is not a good-and-better decision. It is a trade, and the two halves of it are the wind and the light.
Here is the whole trade in one table, then the parts of it that are not a matter of taste.
Morning or sunset, side by side
Five hours and €100 per person on the shared boat either way. What changes is the light, the wind, the crowd at each stop, and what happens to the rest of your day.
| Morning cruise | Sunset cruise | |
|---|---|---|
| Times | 10:00 – 15:00 shared. 09:30 – 14:30 private. | 15:00 to sunset shared. 14:30 – 19:30 private. The clock shifts through the season because the sun does. |
| Light | High sun and hard shadows. The water over the pale pumice off White Beach goes turquoise and stays that way for two hours. | The caldera wall lit from the west, then Oia backlit and going pink. The cliffs are the subject, not the water. |
| Sea state | The flattest window of the day. The meltemi normally builds through the day and eases in the early evening. | Chop usually peaks mid-afternoon and drops away in the last hour. The exposed part is the run out, not the run home. |
| Water temperature | Identical. Sea temperature is a monthly average, not a daily one — about 22 °C in June and 24.5 °C in August (Climates to Travel, seen 25 August 2026). | Identical in the water. Different out of it: the air cools quickly once the sun is down, and you will be wet. |
| Crowds at the stops | Red Beach and White Beach are busiest late morning, when the big boats are working the same coast. | The south coast has emptied by late afternoon. The crowd moves north instead — everything afloat wants to be off Oia at sunset. |
| What is cooked | Lunch, around 13:45, off the grill at the volcano. BBQ chicken and shrimp, Greek salad, pasta, vine leaf rolls and the dips. | The same food, served later as dinner, with the light going while you eat it. |
| Swimming | Four stops, sea state permitting. This is the longer time in the water of the two. | Fewer and shorter stops, because the boat has to be in position for the sun. |
| Afterwards | Ashore by 15:00. The evening is still yours. | Your day is finished. You land in the dark, salty, and wanting a shower rather than a restaurant booking. |
| Who it suits | Swimmers, snorkellers, families with small children, anyone prone to seasickness, photographers who came for the beaches. | Couples, birthdays and anniversaries, and anyone staying on the east side of the island with no sunset from the room. |
| Sells out | Later. Morning seats usually hold longer. | First. Operators publishing booking guidance tell guests to aim four to six weeks ahead for July and August sunset departures (santorini-yachts.com, seen 25 August 2026). |
Both cruises anchor offshore at every stop — no swimming stop on this coast has a jetty, so you reach the water from the boat. Your exact meeting point is confirmed with your booking.
Why the morning water is flatter
This is the one part of the decision that is not a preference.
The meltemi is the northerly wind that runs the Cyclades in summer. It can blow from late May to mid-September, is near-continuous in July and August, and peaks between mid-July and mid-August.
Published strength is a strong Force 5 to 6, rising quickly to Force 7 and occasionally Force 8, with higher gusts in the channels between islands where the wind accelerates. Sailing sources put the usual onset in the early afternoon at 4 to 5 Beaufort, 11 to 21 knots, dying out at sunset (kavas.com and sailingissues.com, seen 25 August 2026).
The pattern matters more than the number. A 10:00 departure gets the calm end of the day and is home before the worst of it. A 15:00 departure sails into a building wind and comes home as it drops. If you are unsure about your stomach, that is the whole argument — and there is more in seasickness and sea conditions.
One honest caveat. The caldera is walled by cliffs up to about 300 m, so on a windy day the water inside it is often the calm option on the island. The exposed stretch on either cruise is the south coast and the corner at the Akrotiri lighthouse.
When the light actually goes
If you are taking the sunset cruise, the date matters more than the month. These are computed with the NOAA solar equations for 36.4167° N, 25.4333° E, at sea level — which is exactly where you will be sitting.
| Date, 2026 | Sunset, Athens time | What that means on board |
|---|---|---|
| 1 May | 20:05 | Sea about 18.5 °C and brisk. The evening turns cold fast once the sun is down. |
| 1 June | 20:30 | Warm air, sea about 22 °C. The full five hours run to the light. |
| 1 July | 20:40 | The latest sunset of the year. Also the heart of meltemi season. |
| 15 August | 20:10 | The warmest water of the year, about 24.5 °C, and the busiest water too. |
| 15 September | 19:27 | Sunset is pulling back by roughly a minute and a half a day. Water still about 24 °C. |
| 15 October | 18:43 | You are ashore before 19:30. Bring a jacket. You will use it. |
These are sea-level, flat-horizon times, which is the right reference for a boat and the wrong one for a table on the rim — an observer at 250 to 350 m sees the sun set slightly later. The full set is in sunset times by month.
If you can only do one
Take the morning if you want to swim. Four stops, flatter water, and the south coast before the fleet gets there. It is also the cruise we put families with young children on.
Take the sunset if the day itself is the occasion. A birthday, an anniversary, a first evening on the island. Dinner on deck with the caldera going orange is a different thing from lunch on deck at midday.
If you get seasick, take the morning. Not because the sunset cruise is rough — most days it is not — but because the odds are better, and the run home is the part people remember badly.
If you have one night on the island, take the sunset. You will not get another. If you have three days or more, take the morning cruise and watch the sunset from a wall in Imerovigli for nothing.
If it is a private charter, the question mostly goes away. The private day cruise runs 09:30 to 14:30 and the private sunset 14:30 to 19:30, and both move to suit you within daylight and the weather. See private vs semi-private.
A layer. Air over the water drops fast once the sun has gone, and you will have been swimming. Guests underestimate this in May and from late September every single season.
A dark swimsuit. Both cruises swim at the hot springs on Palea Kameni, where iron oxide turns the water ochre. It marks pale fabric permanently. Do not wear the swimsuit you like most.

Common questions
Should I take a morning or sunset cruise?
Morning for calmer water, longer swimming and fewer boats at the same stops. Sunset for the golden light on the caldera wall and dinner cooked on deck. If you get motion sick, or you are bringing small children, take the morning. If the day is a celebration, take the sunset.
Which cruise is calmer, morning or sunset?
The morning, in meltemi season. The wind normally builds through the day and eases again at sunset, so a 10:00 departure gets the flattest water available. In May and in October, when the meltemi is not running, the two departures are much closer than people expect.
Which is better — a day cruise or a sunset cruise?
Day cruises get more and longer swimming in flatter water. Sunset cruises trade some of that for the light. Both are five hours and €100 per person on the shared boat, so this is a preference question rather than a value one. Ask your stomach, not your wallet.
Do both cruises visit the hot springs?
Both are routed through the caldera and swim at Palea Kameni when the sea allows it. Neither lands on the volcano: the boats anchor offshore, and walking Nea Kameni needs the national park fee and most of an afternoon. The captain reorders stops for wind, not for schedule.
Can you still swim on a sunset cruise?
Yes, but less. The boat has to be in position for the sun, so the stops are fewer and shorter than on the morning cruise. The water is the same temperature at both ends of the day. The air is not, and getting out at 19:00 in October is cold.
Is the sunset cruise cold on the way back?
Often, yes. Air temperature over the water drops quickly once the sun is gone, and you will have been in the sea. In July and August a t-shirt is usually enough. In May, and from late September onwards, bring a windproof layer and use it.
Sunset cruise or daytime cruise in May?
In May the sea is about 18.5 °C and the evenings turn properly fresh once the sun drops. The daytime cruise gives you better swimming. If you want the May sunset anyway, bring a jacket — the temperature change on the water surprises people every year.
Which one sells out first?
Sunset, across the island. Operators publishing booking guidance tell guests to aim four to six weeks ahead for July and August sunset seats (santorini-yachts.com, seen 25 August 2026). Morning departures usually hold longer. Send us a date and we will tell you what is actually free.
