What a Santorini boat tour in October is actually like

A Santorini boat tour in October gives you a sea still at about 22 °C, empty anchorages and lower light, against an earlier sunset and less reliable wind. Sunset falls from 19:03 on the 1st to 18:43 by the 15th. Late October is a genuine gamble.

October is the month people ask about most and the one nobody writes about properly. The honest answer has four parts, and two of them are good news.

The water is still warm. The stops are empty. The sunset comes back fast. And the wind stops being predictable in a way it is not between June and September.

The numbers

Three months, five things that change. Sunset times are computed with the NOAA solar equations for 36.4167° N, 25.4333° E at sea level, for 2026, and are approximate. Sea temperatures are the Climates to Travel monthly averages.

The cruise levy is charged to your onboard account on disembarkation and applies only to cruise-ship arrivals — nobody flying in or coming by ferry pays it. It took effect on 21 July 2025 and is still in force. On price, the market does discount the shoulder months. Viator's 2026 band for a shared five-hour catamaran day cruise runs from about €60 at the bottom to €150 at the top, typically €100 to €110 (seen 25 August 2026). Ours is €100 in every month we sail.

The sea is not the warmest of the year, whatever you have read

This is the claim we most often have to correct, and correcting it makes October look better rather than worse.

santorinidave.com's boat-tour guide states that October water is at its warmest of the year (seen 25 August 2026). The monthly averages do not support it. August is the peak at about 24.5 °C, September holds 24.0, and October has cooled to 22.0.

What is true, and more useful, is the lag. Water gives its heat back two months behind the air. So October at 22 °C is level with June and three and a half degrees warmer than May, even though the air has clearly turned.

The practical effect: you will swim in October. Four stops, the hot springs at Palea Kameni among them, and nobody standing on the swim platform working up to it. What you will notice is the air afterwards, not the water. Bring a layer for the deck.

What October gives you that July does not

Empty anchorages. June to September carries the heaviest booking pressure across the market, and it shows at the stops. In October there are days when Mesa Pigadia is a cove with one boat in it. Red Beach without a queue of hulls in front of the cliff is a different photograph entirely.

Lower light. The sun sits lower in the sky, so shadows arrive earlier and the caldera wall takes colour sooner in the afternoon. Guides that cover the shoulder months say the same thing: go earlier in the day, because the light moves faster.

A cooler deck. Five hours on the water in late July is hot work, shade or no shade. In October the middle of the day is comfortable rather than survivable.

A calmer boat, usually. The meltemi peaks mid-July to mid-August. By October it is intermittent rather than the default. When the weather is settled, October afternoons are among the flattest of the season.

What October takes away

The evening. Sunset is 19:03 on 1 October and 18:43 by the 15th, against 20:40 in early July. A sunset cruise leaving at 15:00 in October is a different shape of day: shorter light at the end, dinner served earlier, and a cooler run home.

The clock. Greek clocks go back on 25 October 2026. By 1 November sunset reads 17:23. Of that eighty-minute drop from mid-October, sixty minutes is the clock change and only about twenty is the sun. It still means the last week of the month gets dark early enough to change your plans.

Reliability. Southerlies return in October, and a southerly is the wind that ruins the south coast while a northerly leaves it sheltered. The chance of a reordered route or a cancelled day is higher than in July, and it climbs through the month.

Choice. The published market season for Santorini boat tours runs April through October. Fewer boats run each week as the month goes on, so a cancelled Tuesday has fewer Wednesdays to move to.

Late October is a gamble, and we will say so before you book

The first fortnight is a good bet. After about the 20th, three things stack up at once: the wind gets less predictable, sunset falls off a cliff on the 25th when the clocks change, and the fleet starts winding down for the winter.

We have not published our own first and last sailing dates of the season. The market season is April to October; ours has never been written down, so we are not going to print one here.

If you are booking late October anyway, book the cruise for the first day of your stay rather than the last. A weather cancellation costs you nothing in money and everything in opportunity if there is no day left to move to.

Which October cruise to take

The 10:00 day cruise if swimming is the point. Warmest water of the day, three anchored stops, and back on land at 15:00 with the afternoon still in front of you. €100 per person.

The 15:00 sunset cruise if the light is the point. It works in October — arguably better than in July, because the sun is lower and the colour lasts across the caldera rather than dropping straight into the sea. Dinner is cooked on board and the wine comes out earlier in the evening. Also €100 per person.

The private boat if there are eight of you or fewer and you want the route to be yours. €1,200 for the boat, which is €150 each at eight. It is never cheaper per head than a shared seat, and we will not pretend otherwise.

Whichever you take, the inclusions do not change with the month: hotel transfer both ways, lunch cooked on board, Santorini wine, beer and water, snorkelling gear and towels.
